Noel Turnbull – DrinkWise Board member since October 2005
Noel is a Director of Growth Solutions Group and Adjunct Professor in Communications at RMIT University. Noel has had 35 years experience in communication strategy, issues management and journalism. Noel has served as an Australian Army officer, a Parliamentary Press Secretary, and was Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority communications head, before establishing his own public relations consultancy, which went on to become Australia’s largest. Noel was Turnbull, Porter Novelli’s CEO, Chairman and a Porter Novelli International Global Director until his retirement. He has been President of the Melbourne International Arts Festival; Chairman of the RMIT Communications Faculty Course Advisory Committee; Chairman of Visions of Australia; National Book Council Chairman; and a Leadership Victoria Council Member. Noel has published two books, A History of Port Melbourne and recently The Millennium Edge. He is currently Deputy President of the Victorian College of the Arts Council; Victorian Writers Centre Patron; and an editorial advisory board member of a number of Australian and international communications journals. Noel is an honorary Doctor of Communication (RMIT University) and Fellow of both the Public Relations Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Linda Brennan
Dr Brennan was appointed Associate Professor in Marketing in the Faculty of Business & Enterprise at Swinburne University, Melbourne in July 2005. She has taught at Universities in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the US and the UK. In the lead up to becoming a full time academic, Dr Brennan had an active consulting practice in marketing and strategic research. Her clients include government, not for profit and educational marketers. Her research interests are social and government marketing and especially the influence of marketing communications and advertising on behaviour. Dr Brennan has published in the field of not for profit and social marketing, particularly in the higher education sector.
Stephen Dann
Dr Stephen Dann is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Management, Marketing and International Business, College of Business and Economics at the Australian National University.
His research interests include social change marketing, political marketing and the adaptation of commercial marketing to non commercial applications such as behavioural change. He has written, researched and published in a diverse range of marketing sub disciplinary areas including Internet marketing, marketing communications and consumer behaviour. Dr Dann has co-authored a series of text books, articles and conference papers in marketing, and has travelled internationally to present his work to a wide range of audiences.
Dr Dann holds a PhD and Bachelors degree in Commerce from Griffith University, Australia, and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in government and Law from the University of Queensland. In 1999, he won the University of the Sunshine Coast and AGB Australia Best Academic Paper Award for his article on “Street Level Marketing”. He has held the positions of Post Doctoral Fellow in the School of Advertising Marketing and Public Relations, Faculty of Business, Queensland University of Technology, senior consultant for the Australia-based sports arts and entertainment ratings agency Sparten, and former lecturer for the School of Marketing, Griffith University, Australia.
Jodie Grieve
Jodie Grieve is the Director of the Social Marketing Unit in the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. A marketing practitioner with nearly 20 years experience in the field, Jodie has worked in both the private and public sectors.
Since 1994 she has led campaign teams to deliver national social marketing campaigns for the Australian Government. These campaigns have addressed public health and social issues across a range of target markets include illicit drug prevention, cancer detection and prevention, childhood obesity and emergency responses to communicable diseases. She has also assisted with campaigns targeting alcohol misuse, tobacco prevention and immunisation. Currently responsible for the development and delivery of the National Drugs Campaign, National Safe Use of Alcohol Campaign and the Alerting the Community to the Links between Illicit Drugs and Mental Illness program which involves consultation with key stakeholders including the Australian National Council on Drugs.
During her time with the Department of Health and Ageing, Jodie has also held the titles of Director, General Practice Communications and Director, E-Health Strategic Planning and has contributed to policy development in the area of general practice remuneration, training and education and workforce distribution and the emerging area of electronic health care information systems.
Prior to working for the Australian Government, Jodie worked in marketing roles in the banking and finance sector.
Michael Hyde
Michael Hyde, holding a Bachelor of Commerce from Canterbury University in Christchurch, is a Strategy Planner at Clemenger BBDO, with over 6 years experience working across a variety of clients in the alcoholic beverages, sport, tourism & leisure, arts, FMCG and Automotive industries.
As a Strategy Planner his task is to have a deep understanding of consumer behaviour and empathy for the common person. His role is to bring the voice of the people to marketing, brand and communication programs, helping to make them relevant, engaging and ultimately motivating. Furthermore, Michael has experience in both creative communications development and in media strategy development, ensuring both content and context are aligned and compelling to the audience.
His social marketing experience includes working on the creative strategy for the TAC Fatigue campaign at Clemenger and being part of the team involved in developing the media strategy for the Queensland Government’s Problem Gambling campaign while working at Mediacom prior to joining Clemenger.
Mike MacAvoy – CEO DrinkWise Australia
Dr Mike MacAvoy was born and educated in Dunedin, New Zealand. He attended the University of Otago where he gained a Bachelor of Science and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Science (Psychology), before training in Clinical Psychology and embarking on a career in the fields of addictions and forensic psychology. Mike studied the effects of Cannabis sativa on human subjects, for which he was awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy (Psychology) in 1976.
Moving to Australia in 1976, he took up the position of Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Drugs of Dependence Branch, Victorian Health Department. In 1979 he moved to Brisbane as Supervisor of Treatment Services with the Alcohol and Drug Services, Queensland Department of Health. In 1985 he was appointed Director of the Drug and Alcohol Bureau, Northern Territory and in 1988 Director, Drug and Alcohol Directorate, NSW Health.
In addition, Dr MacAvoy has held the positions of Chairperson, Inter-governmental Committee on Drugs, and Chairperson of the National Drug Strategy Committee, which advises all State and Territory governments on drug-related matters in Australia. In 1994 he returned to New Zealand to take up the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand (ALAC). This is a government organisation which has the statutory roles of advising government on alcohol related matters, promoting moderation in the use of alcohol and reducing alcohol-related harm for the nation.
He is a former deputy president of the International Council on Alcohol and the Other Addictions based in Lausanne ,Switzerland. He took up the position of Chief Executive Officer of DrinkWise Australia in early December 2006.
Josephine Previte
Dr Josephine Previte is a Lecturer in Marketing in the UQ Business School at the University of Queensland.
Josephine has a PhD in social marketing, having investigated the use of the internet in online social marketing strategy. She is interested in a critical marketing analysis of consumption and marketplace behaviours and has other interests in the study of government and not-for-profit marketing strategy. In addition to a strong focus in marketing and society research, Josephine has conducted a range of consultancy projects with not-for-profit organisations and government departments implementing social marketing campaigns, as well as being involved in evaluating the impact of interactive technologies on regional and rural communities.
John Scott
John Scott, a Senior Consultant at Quantum Research, has over 15 years experience in consumer marketing and social research. He has published and presented widely on the evaluation of some of Australia’s most significant initiatives in public health, consumer health and health promotion including drug and alcohol campaigns.
Throughout his career in marketing and research agencies, John has led social and consumer insight research and provided advice across a range of industries in both the public and private sectors. He has advised a number of Commonwealth and State Departments including the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Health and Ageing, Health Services and the Department of Human Services, Victoria and Queensland Health. He has also provided specialist advice to the Australian Medical Association, the private health insurance sector and the allied health sector including pathology services and the pharmaceutical sector.
John was Director of Mainely International, a boutique research and consulting firm, where he provided specialised services in client satisfaction, service/product development, campaign development and program evaluation to a range of clients including the Australian Drug Foundation.
Prior to this, he was Policy and Research Officer at the Health Issues Centre where he undertook research into consumer health issues.
As a VicHealth Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne’s Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, John conducted numerous research projects including the Evaluation of the Rage without Alcohol Campaign and the Evaluation of the Healthy Communities Project. He has also been involved in ground-breaking work demonstrating the benefits of outdoor education and expeditions for troubled youth.
John was awarded a Master of Science in Health (Primary Health Care) from Flinders University for his thesis, “Perception of Risk and Harm in the Licensed Drinking Environment”. He also holds a Bachelor of Social Work from The University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from Monash University. He is a Qualified Practising Market Researcher, a full member of both the Australian Market and Social Research Association (AMSRA) and the Australian Evaluation Society.
Jennie Shortt
Jennie Shortt is the Acting Director of the Alcohol and Indigenous Programs Section in the Drug Strategy Branch of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. She is responsible for the National Alcohol Strategy, review of the Australian Alcohol Guidelines, working in partnership with social marketing on the National Alcohol Campaign, monitoring of alcohol advertising and international alcohol issues.
Jennie has worked in the health sector for over twenty years, firstly as a nurse before moving to the Public Sector. She has held a range of positions in both the population health policy and program areas including community methadone programs, needle and syringe programs, illicit drug diversion, national alcohol program and Indigenous capacity building initiatives.
In her current role, Jennie chairs the Capacity Building in Indigenous Communities Advisory Group and the Secondary Supply of Alcohol Working Group. She is also a member of the National Alcohol Campaign Reference Group, the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Working Group, the National Competition Policy Working Group, the National Inhalant Abuse Taskforce Coordinating Group and is one of two government representatives on the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee.
Rick Swinard
Rick Swinard has been a director of the Australian Drug Foundation since 1990 and chairman since 1997. He is Corporate Affairs Manager of The Herald & Weekly Times, publisher of Australia's biggest-selling daily newspaper the Herald Sun. He has worked in the newspaper industry in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
