Parents to be

PRE-NATAL and BREASTFEEDING

Every time you drink your baby absorbs the alcohol directly through your bloodstream into the placenta. Therefore, your baby will have the same blood alcohol content in his or her bloodstream as you do. As a result, it is recommended that pregnant women should not drink any alcohol at all during pregnancy.

Limiting or even avoiding alcohol is also recommended when you are trying to conceive, as you may not know exactly when you become pregnant. It is also best not to drink when you are breastfeeding your new baby as the alcohol will be absorbed into their bloodstream through your milk.

How do I be DrinkWise?
  • During pregnancy, the safest option is to avoid alcohol completely.
  • Limit alcohol or avoid drinking when you are trying to get pregnant.
  • Limit alcohol or avoid drinking when you are breastfeeding.

You have nine months to build the perfect baby; you have the rest of your life to drink.

Of course, if you have particular concerns regarding your own drinking, and its effects on you or your family, consult your General Practitioner or another health professional.
