About DrinkWise

Australia has a culture of drinking to get drunk, and risky drinking is on the rise, especially in young people.

We believe that social change is possible and with it comes enormous benefits for society.

DrinkWise is an evidence-based not-for-profit research and social change organisation that fosters innovative approaches towards developing and maintaining a safer drinking culture in Australia.

Our vision is to create an Australia in which drinking in moderation is acceptable and 'drinking to get drunk' is unacceptable.

The DrinkWise philosophy is founded on industry leadership, community partnerships and recognition that alcohol abuse and misuse is a significant problem confronting the Australian community. Tackling the drinking culture in Australia requires a sustained strategic and multi-faceted response, working collaboratively with governments, industry, non-government organisations and the broader community.

The DrinkWise strategic plan charts our direction, aims and vision for a ten year period, from 2004 to 2014. It provides a framework against which the performance of DrinkWise can be assessed, and brings into focus our commitment to a solutions-based approach to alcohol abuse and misuse in Australia.

We are funded by the Australian alcohol industry, and governed by a board of six community and six industry representatives. The structure of DrinkWise represents a unique opportunity to link the preventative health sector, community, industry and government's objectives.

DrinkWise has embarked upon the first ever long-term social change program in responsible alcohol consumption, activating behavioural transformation via generational change.

Our website aims to provide information to assist parents interested in finding out how their drinking may influence how their children drink in the future, and provides content to help parents take logical and responsible steps to delaying their teen’s drinking and assisting their teens to become responsible adults.

The information has been compiled from DrinkWise’s own research, research from authoritative studies, and knowledge gained in consultation with experts in the fields of biomedicine, neuroscience and child and adolescent psychology.
